The TEL Team
The Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL) team within the Centre for Learning Innovation and Professional Practice (CLIPP) provide a specialist service focussed on enhancing teaching practices and enriching student learning. The team comprise a group of expert learning technologists who work in partnership with Schools and Central Services to offer advice and support in the effective use of technologies in teaching, learning and assessment.
The team offers a variety of services including professional development workshops, online resources explaining how learning technologies can be used to achieve particular teaching and learning goals, and collaborative approaches working with staff and students to develop digital capabilities.
We support the effective use of a range of learning technologies:
- Blackboard Learn – the University’s virtual learning environment;
- Blackboard Collaborate – the University’s online collaboration tool;
- Turnitin – online marking and feedback and text checking;
- Panopto (Aston Replay) – lecture and event capture;
- Veevox – classroom polling
Requesting help & support
Each academic school has a named Learning Technologist from the Technology Enhanced Learning Team, who is the main point of contact for all Learning Technology related support. To request support, we ask that you contact the central team. In most instances, the named person for your school will respond, however contacting the team instead of the individual means that we can provide you with a more reliable service.

When making a support request please always include as much information as possible, such as:
- any related module code
- the system you are having problems with
- dates and times of any problems
- screenshots where appropriate. When making screenshots if you can include as much of the screen as possible (including the url for web-based systems), it will often help us diagnose the problem.
When you request training, we will attempt to accommodate you within a scheduled workshop, however, 1-to-1 training is also available where appropriate.
Introduction to Technology-Enhanced Learning
All new members of staff should be contacted by the relevant technologist for your school or areas within one month of starting your new position. You will be offered a 1-to-1 “Introduction to TEL at Aston”. This lasts 1 hour and takes the form of a discussion, that highlights Aston’s TEL provision. It is also an opportunity to discuss future training sessions to get you up to speed on all of the learning technologies that you will need to use.

Academic Technology Induction
The TEL team in partnership with the Digital Capabilities working group has created a “self-service” online TEL induction. It will give you an overview of the learning technologies that you will need to use to fulfil your new role at Astonas well as some of the related university policies and processes. Three pathways, based on academic roles, have been created that will help guide you through the basics.
Staff Development
The TEL Team is in the process of designing a number of training courses that will be bookable via the “Staff Core system”. Check back soon for a list of courses and descriptions.
